What is Health Careers Job Training?

The Health Careers Job Training (HCJT) program provides a real life experience to explore health career related jobs in preparation for competitive employment. Upon meeting requirements/qualifications, students may choose to continue on to the Health Careers Internship (HCIP) program with a goal of being hired in the department in which they are interning. The core site for HCJT is Hillcrest Hospital located in Mayfield, however additional sites are being explored. The students may work one-on-one with a mentor in one of the departments, a CEVEC staff member or possibly a small group assignment. To gain a better understanding of job requirements, typically the student will spend nine weeks in a rotation/department before moving to a new one. All students enrolled are expected to be as professional as those they work alongside and have the ability to follow the policies of the hospital. Students are assessed using a four point standard based rubric focusing on sixteen employability skills in the workplace. Weekly meetings are held with each student to review progress as well as develop plans for future job rotations.

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate specific skill training required to be successful at entry level jobs

  • Develop and apply employability skills such as time management, grooming, following directions, work quality, etc.

  • Demonstrate professional work behaviors and skills

  • Demonstrate and apply independence while on the job

  • Use and apply knowledge of their career interests and abilities in an effort to obtain and sustain employment

  • Demonstrate an increased understanding of what it takes to successfully transition from school to work and/or further education

  • Develop and apply both work and life skills needed to be successful adults
