Community Living Skills Program

Students attending the Community Living Skills program have the opportunity to learn about home and community skills that will maximize independence.  With a home in Mayfield Village, and the surrounding businesses and community resources, students are challenged to develop their skills in cooking, cleaning. laundry, home maintenance, home safety, budgeting, safe home and community behavior, as well as learning how safely access and utilize community resources, such as the library, community centers, and retail establishments.

Yes, homework involves showing off some of the skills developed at home!

CEVEC's Community Living Program is designed to teach students the skills necessary to be as independent as possible in the community and in a home setting. Utilizing a fully furnished home donated by Mayfield Village, students are provided a very realistic instructional environment. With class size, being no larger than eight students per session instruction is highly individualized.
  • Most, not all, of our students have already met their academic requirements at their home school. They attend CL 1/2 a day and their vocational program the other ½. Some students attend the program for 1 semester while others stay the entire year.

  • Our goal is for every student to make progress and be able to improve in their level of independence whether they live with their parents, a group home or by themselves.

  • At the house, we learn how to budget our money, clean, plan meals, cook, do laundry, sew/iron, organize, do basic home and yard maintenance. Students are given homework to transfer their skills at their home.

  • Almost every day the job trainer or I take our students out in the community. We go to the grocery store, the bank, the library, Target, depending on the theme of that week. We have guest speakers or classes, such as ; Mayfield firemen and police officer talk about safety , Home Depot about home maintenance, Metro parks for landscaping, Charter One about banking. We visit an apartment complex and have a former student talk about her experience of living on her own. We visit Hillcrest Hospital to learn how to find a Doctor’s office and the proper etiquette when visiting a loved one. We eat a meal at a restaurant to practice our communication, money (tipping) and table manners.

  • We have daily group discussions on topics such as how to get along with roommates to how to correctly store food. We practice a daily money activity.

  • We host parties and discuss how to plan recreational activities.

  • Visit the power point to see our students at work. See Below.
