TEACH-Teacher Education And Children's Health

Site: Beachwood High School
COLLEGE CREDITS - Tech Prep/CT2
Two year program: grades 11-12

The TEACH program prepares students to fill a vital role in the education of children. This program teaches content knowledge in child and adolescent development, preschool through middle school curriculum and development, content standards and educational theory. High school students receive the opportunity to teach and care for children in many different learning environments through internships. The students learn best practices from teachers in their own community and from all high quality schools. The first year of the program stresses basic skills needed to work with children and the students are provided with the opportunity to actively be engaged with children.

In the second year, the students expand their experiences with opportunities to intern with children birth through

8th grade. Employment options are available during the student’s senior year. Again, the students assume a different role in the classroom and gain more knowledge and experience. In class, the students are involved in learning activities requiring higher order thinking skills where they create and implement many learning opportunities for children. At the end of the two year program, the students must pass four required Webxams designed by the Ohio Department of Education that evaluates the students’ knowledge on early childhood educational principles, foundations of education and training, educational technology, child and adolescent development, communication, assessment, health and  safety as well as curriculum strategies, instruction and guiding appropriate learning experiences. Students also have the option to complete the Child Development Associate process with the guidance and support from their TEACH teachers or take the ParaPro exam through the Educational Services Center.
