The Mayfield Parent Mentor Program is one of the OHIO PARENT MENTOR PROJECTS that are funded through a grant by the Ohio Department of Education.
What is a Parent Mentor ? A Parent Mentor is the parent of a child with a disability who helps parents of children with disabilities navigate the special education system in partnership with school district personnel.
How a Parent Mentor can help you:
Guide families through the special education process
Listen and provide support to families on an individual basis
Provide information and resources to families on education laws, district programs and services, and community resources.
Attend IEP meetings and other meetings at parent or staff request.
Organize and conduct information sessions or workshops.
Build collaborative partnerships between families and schools.
Provide access to a lending library of books, videos, and resources on special education topics.
Reasons to call a Parent Mentor :
I wonder if my child is receiving all the services he/she needs?
I don't understand how special education will work for my child.
I have questions about my child's IEP.
I wonder what an MFE is or what an ETR is.
I wish I could talk to another parent in confidence who understands my concerns.
I would like to understand my child's disability more fully.
I worry if my child is making progress on his/her IEP and don't know what to do.
I feel intimidated attending IEP meetings alone.
Ohio Parent Mentors receive ongoing training and support through the Ohio Department of Education, Office for Exceptional Children, and the Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities.
All Parent Mentor services are free to district families.
