BUSINESS ACADEMY

COLLEGE TECH PREP OPTION
Two-year program

This comprehensive program has been created to give students an awareness into four different areas of business. Students can begin their endeavor as early as their Freshman year. Its major goal is to give students a wide range of experiences in order to better prepare them for college, technical school or entry into the workforce. The Business Academy's mission is to enhance students' skills for employment, prepare them for real life experiences and give them a knowledge of a viable business operation.

COOPERATIVE BUSINESS INTERNSHIP

Site: Solon High School
One-year Senior program

This is a one-year (4 credit) program for 12th grade students who are interested in working while they attend high school. The teacher/coordinator will assist the student in securing a job-training site. No prior work experience is needed. The Related Class is offered first period (7:30–8:45 a.m.) at Solon High School. Students attend school in the morning and work in the afternoon. Students are required to work 20 hours per week. In addition, they must provide their own transportation to and from work.

CULINARY ARTS

Site: Beachwood High School
Two-year program

The purpose of the Culinary Arts program is to offer
training in food-related occupations to students showing interest and aptitude for the food service industry. The first year consists of a supervised in-school public restaurant experience and related Pro-Start instruction that is endorsed by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. The curriculum includes large quantity food preparation, proper use/care of equipment, compliance with sanitary codes, cross training and catering/dining
service. Culinary Arts I also focuses on ServSafe Training Certification and the Pro-Start Year 1 curriculum. Successful completion of this training curriculum may be applied toward college requirements and is an industry standard. The Culinary Arts II program teaches the Pro-Start Year
2 curriculum including restaurant business management/marketing techniques. Topics such as: employability skills, menu planning/design, cost extension/mark-up, restaurant design and equipment analysis are addressed. The workstudy component allows the students to work in the industry for their lab time, receiving credit and earnings.

MARKETING

Site: Beachwood High School
One-year Senior program

Marketing Technology is an honor college-preparatory course intended for students desiring to study business, marketing or a related field in college or start a business after graduation. Students will explore business topics through class instruction, design individual and group research projects, develop interpersonal communication and leadership skills, and create effective persuasive presentations. The utilization of college textbooks and individual laptops will facilitate the learning of marketing
and management principles. The marketing program
will foster the entrepreneurial spirit through students
developing and operating their own company. All students will participate in a cooperative learning lab in which they are employed in the field of choice, are evaluated at their work sites and apply their unique classroom career field connections.
Students participate in DECA, the marketing leadership association for students, to develop marketing skills outside of the classroom and to collaborate and be involved with other students across the country. Activities include volunteering, fundraising and business competitions which
offer advancement to the state and national level.
