Career Technical Programs Offer Opportunities To High School Students
Excel TECC (Technical Education Career Consortium) programs emphasize the core academic knowledge, advanced technical knowledge and the integration of both academic and technical coursework. This is what we do best. If you can't motivate students, it is impossible to teach them to higher standards. We integrate academic and career/technical studies that result in students gaining deeper knowledge in both areas. Our goal is to produce graduates who meet workplace requirements and who can go on to postsecondary study without remediation. Our Career Technical program teachers have their students read the technical materials of the field, use mathematics to solve real-world problems, and perform thought-provoking, open-ended writing assignments in a team learning environment. A well-crafted concentration of academic and career technical courses above and beyond a solid academic core enables students to see high school as a beginning rather than as an ending, and it increases student achievement in reading, mathematics, and science. It is about learning, and finding direction to make the college education the pursuit of the student's chosen profession, not using college tuition to find themselves.
At Excel TECC our teachers have a tremendous impact on students and the profession in which they work. Students who graduated from our programs come into my office to tell me that they are so far ahead of their college classmates in their field because of the experiences that their Career Technical Teacher had provided. When you as a student, or you as a parent are evaluating academic offerings for high school, consider Excel TECC programs and how they will assist in educated college and career choices down the road.
Explore Programs at the ‘ Opportunity Day/Night'
Excel TECC is getting the word out to the nine consortium high schools that we serve about offerings for the 2007-08 school year. Mr. Joe Hayes is presenting to all the 10 th graders in the Aurora , Beachwood, Chagrin Falls , Mayfield, Orange , Richmond Heights , Solon, South Euclid-Lyndhurst and West Geauga school districts. Students see an overview of the twenty-two programs available to them. Two-year courses for junior and senior years are: Auto Mechanics; Business Academy; Construction Trades; CADD Engineering Technology; Information Technology & Programming; Computers, Networking & Electronics; Construction Management; Cosmetology; Public Safety Services Academy; Culinary Arts; Early Childhood Education; Horticulture; Hospitality & Food Service Careers; Interactive Media; Medical Technologies; Video Broadcasting; and Visual Art & Design. One-year senior-only programs (apply in junior year) are: Biotechnology; Cooperative Business Internship; Marketing; Teaching Professions; and Medical Careers Technology. Courses are held at Aurora, Beachwood, Brush, Mayfield, Orange , Richmond Heights and Solon high schools as well as Alpha Park , Legacy Village Giant Eagle, the Cleveland Botanical Gardens and the Horticulture Center in Gates Mills. College Tech Prep classes are an attractive path combining two years of high school instruction with a seamless connection to two years of college study in the program field. They include college credits earned for the high school course.
After Mr. Hayes' presentation, the students are given a chance to choose two of the programs which interested them for a visit during Opportunity Day, Wednesday January 25, 2007. All parents/guardians of consortium 10 th graders received a flyer describing Excel TECC as well as a postcard invitation for a visit to Opportunity Night, held on the evening of the same day, Thursday January 25, 2007. All programs will be represented at Mayfield High School . After the Opportunity event, applications will be accepted for the 2007-08 school year and an interview for each student will be arranged with program teachers.
For more information, contact Joe Hayes at 440-995-6761 or jhayes@mayfieldschools.org . Consider giving your child the advantage of in-depth study in a field of their interest and preparation for both college and the world of work through an Excel TECC education.
