College Readiness

The Intermediate staff has been focusing on the importance of getting our students excited and interested in going to college. Up to this point, the students and staff have:

  1. Administered a practice ACT exam - 6th graders who scored advanced in at least one subject on the OAA in 5th grade were invited to participate in the Northwestern University Midwestern Academic Talent Search (NUMATS) by taking the ACT in February along side the high school students at Hamilton Township High School. Students are able to see how their abilities compare with those of their peers.

  2. Read articles on preparing students for college at a young age – These articles provided various ideas and strategies that could be incorporated into each of our classrooms to better prepare students for college.  (For example: Teaching good study habits)

  3. Discussed college readiness during lunch bunch – Teachers and students have been discussing college interests, and answering questions students might have during their lunch bunches.

  4. Participating in “Future Focus Friday” – Staff members wore college apparel from the college they attended in order to generate discussion in the classroom about the importance of attending college.

In the near future, we will be:

  1. Having students look at a Career Interest Game – This is an activity for students to match their interests and skills with similar careers.  It can help students to begin thinking about how their personality will fit with different work environments.

  2. Having students take the “Are you Prepared for College?” Quiz – This is a short quiz students can take to get them thinking about the different responsibilities they will have when going to college, and different things they can do at this young age to better prepare themselves.
