Solar Eclipse 2017: Some precautions to take during rare scientific and educational opportunity

Dear Parents and Community,

As you may know, a solar eclipse will be visible on August 21st across North America. In fact, it is the first total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. in the last 38 years. In the Greater Cleveland area, a partial solar eclipse will take place on Monday from 1:06 to 3:51 p.m., according to NASA.

While this is a rare and exciting scientific and educational opportunity, the safety of our students is our first priority. Here, at Mayfield, some of our elementary, middle and high school students and teachers will participate in the study of the solar eclipse using the necessary and mandatory protective solar eclipse glasses. For those classes not participating, students will remain indoors during recess and physical education classes.

After-school athletics and activities will be modified to either remain indoors or take place outside after 4 p.m.

Please review with your student/s the importance of following these safety guidelines on Monday, August 21st from 1:06 – 3:51 p.m.

  • The only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses”

  • Do not look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun during the time of the solar eclipse even when walking home from school or getting onto the school bus without solar eclipse glasses

  • Do not look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun through an unfiltered camera, telescope, binoculars, or other optical device.

  • For more information follow the link provided by NASA about the August 21st solar eclipse - https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/eclipse-101

If you do not want your student to participate in the study of the solar eclipse or if you have additional questions, please contact your child’s school building/s.
