CUTTING-EDGE EDUCATION

Heart dissection at Mayfield Innovation Center Dr Kelly

"THIS EXPERIENCE IS AN INFLUENCE ON MY FUTURE." Those are the words MHS senior Ilya S. shared after he and his classmates dissected a cow's heart under the direction of Dr. Brian Kelly, a Cardiac Anesthesiologist from Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. During today's hands-on, collaboration at the Mayfield Innovation Center, students watched as Dr. Kelly guided the dissection on 3-D heart imaging equipment donated by Siemens.
"It's mind-blowing to have this in front of us," said senior Jenna H. "Mayfield gives us the technology and experiences to foster our growth as students. It's such a privilege." #mychoicemayfield

Mayfield students to learn hands-on with cardiac expert to dissect hearts, diagnose cardiovascular cases using 3-D heart imaging equipment donated by Siemens

It’s not every day high school students have the opportunity to work side-by-side with a cardiac expert on a heart dissection while using cutting-edge, 3-D heart imaging equipment provided by a worldwide leader in industrial digitization.
There are 60 Mayfield High School juniors and seniors with a career interest in the area of medicine who will be given this real-world experience on January 16th at the Mayfield Innovation Center.
“Our driving vision is to prepare students to be successful and to train them with the tools they need for their world,” said Superintendent Keith Kelly.
That driving vison is what Dr. Kelly imparted to his son, Dr. Brian Kelly, a Cardiac Anesthesiologist at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati who will visit Mayfield to teach students about heart function, anatomy, cardiac cycles and pathologic conditions that impact the heart. Dr. Brian Kelly also will lead students through clinical case dissections on a multi-million dollar, 3-D heart imaging machine donated for the day by Siemens.
It’s a learning opportunity that is becoming the “norm” for students in the Mayfield City School District.
“We value learning opportunities that encourage students to have authentic learning experiences,” said Dr. Patrick Ward, Director of Curriculum. “Thanks to Superintendent Kelly, Dr. Kelly and Siemens these students are embedded in an authentic case study with access to medical experts. We’re providing them with a simulation of the real-life experiences they would encounter in the medical field.”
Dr. Brian Kelly will begin the day leading students through a cow heart dissection to examine heart valves and blood flow which will also correlate to 3-D imaging and ultrasounds. Students will have the opportunity to work hands-on with the 3-D imaging equipment and to collaborate with Siemens clinical specialists.
“The idea is for students to see not only why and what we are doing in the medical field but also for them to consider where there are flaws and opportunities for improvements,” Dr. Brian Kelly said. “3-D imaging is a relatively new technology that will continue to evolve and improve. These are the students who will solve the problems and improve the technology. That’s their job in the future. We’re giving them that challenge now.”         Two learning sessions will take place at the Mayfield Innovation Center, 6080 Wilson Mills Road in Mayfield Village from 8-10:30 a.m. and 11:30-2 p.m. Participating students include juniors and seniors studying Anatomy, Math, Advanced Math, Art, Creative Writing and Medical Technology students from the Excel TECC consortium.
“I want students to understand the applications they are learning in high school have meaning and applicability in their world and future careers,” Dr. Kelly said. “Careers fields have merged. In the medical field alone we work with engineers and developers, nurses and doctors, graphic designers and artists. We live and work in a world of collaboration. We want students to understand that and be inspired now.”
