Pearl Harbor officer, Lander Elementary volunteer honored for his service to our country, to our school
Pearl Harbor officer, Lander Elementary volunteer honored for his service to our country, to our school For the last 18 years, Larry Sofia has driven to Lander Elementary School nearly every day to help serve lunches to students.

At the age of 94, Mr. Sofia doesn’t plan to stop giving back. It’s only one reason Mr. Sofia was named a "Lander Hero" at the October Board of Education meeting.

Recently, the staff at the elementary school learned that Mr. Sofia served as a naval officer during World War II aboard the USS West Virginia. On Dec. 7, 1941, a bomb knocked him overboard into Pearl Harbor. Injured, but not beaten, Mr. Sofia went on to serve in 16 more sea battles.

A presentation created by Lander students was shared at the school board meeting to honor our American hero and Lander volunteer. Lander Principal Felecia Evans presented Mr. Sofia with the "Lander Hero" award plaque

Thunderous applause and a standing ovation greeted Mr. Sofia as he slowly and proudly accepted his well-deserved award and recognition.
