Outstanding Football Achievement

The 7th grade football team defeated Nordonia 32-8 yesterday. Jake Dostal returned a short punt for a touchdown to put the Wildcats on the board early and Jarrett Fox ran in the conversion run. The Wildcats then moved right back down the field with passes from Mark Manfredi to Kyle Silbernagel and Sam Guerrini Guerrini then threw a touchdown pass to Steven Schmidt and caught a pass from Manfredi for the conversion. Blocking by Carter Kusner Anthony Vellotta, Mario Valetta and Yannis Sarris gave Manfredi time to complete a touchdown pass and conversion pass to Jake Dostal. Strong defensive play from Dillon Coffey, Mike Harden, Fox, Dostal, Manfredi and Silbernagel made the lead stand up. Jarrett Fox scored the last touchdown for the cats with a 50 yard run. Kerry Calkins and Damonte Moncrieffe kept the offense moving in the 4th quarter and Jack Schumacher and Andrew Curl closed out the scoring by sacking the Nordonia quarterback in the endzone for a safety.

April 2013 Seventh Grade Student of the Month

Genna DiPippo – Mustang Team
Genna was chosen as the Mustang Team student of the month for April. Genna truly is one of the kindest, most hard-working, genuine, and wonderful students we have had the privilege to call a Mustang. She gives freely of her time to help others; she is involved with student council, assists students each Tuesday in adapted art classes with Mrs. Volkic, babysits, and stays involved with her friends and family. In her spare time, Genna stays busy running with the Girls on the Run program, playing soccer in the rec league, reading, and sewing. She is in the M Factor Top 12 for this year, and hopes to be in Vocal Dimensions next year. When she grows up, she hopes to go to Julliard or perhaps be a marine biologist. As Genna is extremely bright and excels in all of her classes, we think anything is possible for her! Her intelligence and beautiful spirit will take her very far in life, and we look forward to seeing what she can achieve.

Word of the Week for the Week of April 15
Obsequious is your word of the week for the week of April 15th.
All people, children, adolescents and adults, possess a desire to be liked or feel included. Forming any kind of relationship requires hard work and patience. However, we have all observed someone at one point or another try to win someone’s favor by using excessive flattery. An obsequious person may try to win favor or ingratiate himself or herself to others through insincere or excessive flattery. However, obsequious is not always a negative; it also has a positive tone when it is used to mean deferential, obedient or dutiful. For example, the students maintained an obsequious demeanor in front of their favorite teachers. Obsequious comes from the Latin obsequium, "compliant." It has a wide range of meanings: fawning, flattering, ingratiating, submissive, deferential, compliant, servile, and respectful. As always, the world of vocabulary is as vast and beautiful as the Pacific ocean. Seek to add new words into your vocabulary each week.

January 2013 Student of the Month
Jack Barron enters the classroom each day prepared to engage the learning process and to enhance the learning experience. Jack refuses to be a passive spectator when it comes to school. His enthusiasm and genuine respect for his education not only deepens his own understanding of the content but also inspires his peers to advance their own leaning and potential. Team Hele proudly promotes the ideal of Move it Forward, and Jack exemplifies this readiness. Furthermore, Jack shows that respect is something not lost on our youth, as it is impossible to walk by Jack without hearing a “hello,” “have a nice day,” or “how are you?” Jack is a faithful steward of his talent, and Team Hele congratulates him on earning the distinction: Student of the Month.

April 2013 Seventh Grade Student of the Month

Maddy Wene – Adventure Team
The Adventure Team selected Maddy Wene as the Student of the Month for April 2013. Maddy brings a sunny smile and positive attitude to class every day. She regularly shows respect to her teachers and her classmates. There is not a time that goes by that Maddy doesn’t greet her teachers in the hall. This courtesy is forgotten by so many. Maddy is an exemplary student in the classroom. She comes to class ready to learn, shows kindness to her peers when working in groups, and always puts forth her best effort. True, she doesn’t always do homework, and she often multitasks by honing her phenomenal artistic skills, but she is always listening critically and contributing positively. One of Maddy’s strong points is her ability to reason through problems. She accepts challenges and applies higher level thinking skills in many situations. Because of her positive attitude, kindness towards others and interest in learning, we are happy to pick Maddy as our student of the month.

January 2013 Student of the Month
Because she always wears a smile, outsiders might mistake Courtney Favazzo as someone who doesn’t take things seriously. That assumption would be a major mistake! One of the hardest working students on Team SuperSonic, Courtney does not let up for a second. She pushes herself to the limit academically every single day. Her stellar grades and reputation are a testament to Courtney’s determination and endurance. Courtney often goes out of her way to make sure she’s grasping difficult concepts and clearly spends her time preparing for future assessments. She emulates what all students should strive for everyday-academic success and achievement. Outside of the classroom, Courtney demonstrates her aptitude on the soccer field and basketball court, where she applies the same unparalleled work ethic we see in the classroom. Courtney F. is undeniably a star, and shines for the SuperSonics this month!

Mayfield Middle School Word of the Week
Altruistic is the word of the week for the week of April 22nd.
Mayfield Middle School has a strong history of giving; giving of its time and treasure to help those in need. From the endless fundraisers, like Harvest for Hunger, the Halloween Polio Drive, Hoops for Providence House to the annual Beautiful Lengths initiative to scores of other campaigns, Mayfield gives abundantly of one of life’s most precious gifts: Time. Altruism is defined as “a practice of unselfish concern for or devotion to the welfare of others.” If a person is characterized as altruistic, he or she is considered charitable, kind, selfless, magnanimous, a person with an abundance of goodwill. The world often seems like a scary place, but the muscle of goodwill or altruism is one of the strongest muscles we possess, and it will always defeat evil.

Word of the Week
The weather this past weekend was majestic. Whether you experienced its glory by running, biking, skipping or smiling, the warm weather and sunny skies stirred our hopes that winter had finally set us free. The beautiful weather also made us feel that summer was just a wink away, producing feelings of insouciance. Insouciance means carefree, breezy, lighthearted, and free from worry or concern or that cheerful feeling when nothing is bothering you. Insouciance has roots in the French IN, meaning not and SE soucier, meaning "to care," giving the English word its "uncaring" meaning. While Insouciance can be a positive — it also has its pitfalls. If you are insouciant or indifferent to your responsibilities, like dreaming of summer when there are still eight weeks remaining in the 4th quarter, you may be accused of apathy. As you celebrate the sun and warm days, we have been gifted with, value them- but not at the expense of your responsibilities.

Word of the Week
On Sunday May 12th, we celebrated Mother’s Day. Mothers have dynamic qualities, qualities that give them the power to exercise extraordinary patience, extend boundless charity, dispense sage advice, withstand trying situations, and demonstrate great resolve. Most importantly, they inspire in us, “the gift of possibility.” Moms possess an indomitable spirit, herculean in nature. Indomitable means that one cannot be subdued or overcome, as in a person’s courage or will or unconquerable such as an indomitable warrior.
While most mother’s won’t wear visible combat gear; rest assured, moms, with their indomitable spirit, are ready to do battle everyday for their most precious gifts: You!

All of their data was submitted to a scientist at the University of Minnesota. The group’s curiosity led to many additional investigations and a great deal of learning. The students had the opportunity to share their work with the fourth period sixth- grade science classes and went on to present their findings to the Mayfield community at a special event held at the park over Labor Day weekend. The student’s knowledge of the Monarch butterfly and its environment was quite impressive. Next summer, the students plan on continuing their learning with a new project involving birds.

Last year’s longest flight was to Eastern New Jersey! Click here to check out the photos from the balloon launch event.

Regional Power of the Pen Tournament
Congratulations to the six Mayfield students who competed Saturday at the Regional Power of the Pen tournament. Michael Graziano, Celia Kusmer, Tiegan Lorkovich, Sabrina Ho, Jordyn Musi, and May Xiao all had earned a place at Saturday’s tournament by placing in the top half of writers at the March district tournament.
At the regional competition, the two hundred qualifying writers representing thirty-two schools from Summit, Cuyahoga, and Lake Counties, participated in three rounds of impromptu writing.
Jordyn Musi was awarded ninth-place honors among the one hundred eighth-grade writers in attendance—earning a medal and a coveted place at the state competition for the second year in a row. Jordyn, along with Celia Kusmer, Sabrina Ho, and May Xiao, earned superior scores of “one” in a round of writing by having their pieces chosen as the best from their rounds.
The other Mayfield writers await the tournament results to see if they were in the top 25 percent of finishers to earn the right to compete at States alongside Jordyn.

8th Grade Students of the Month
Angelo has displayed a positive attitude and an excellent work ethic since the first day of school. He is responsible, respectful and follows the SuperSonics guidelines and expectations at all times. We are continually impressed with how Angelo demonstrates respect toward both his teachers and his peers. Angelo is also a dedicated member of the Wildcat football team. We couldn’t be more proud to nominate this model citizen for student of the month.
Audrey was selected as Student of the Month for several reasons. Audrey is a hardworking student who comes to class prepared every day, is productive in class, and asks insightful questions. She is respectful to her peers and her teachers and always exhibits a positive attitude for learning. She readily accepts challenges in the classroom, and is an excellent representative of Team Galaxy and Mayfield Middle School
Nikki commands the attention of her peers and her teachers through her dignity and poise. Just as Lady Liberty stands at the entrance of New York Harbor, Nikki stands as a role model for Team Hele, a beacon of honesty and diligence. In all of her classes, Nikki’s pursuits are marked by her consistency: her consistency to encourage her peers, her consistency to pursue excellence and her consistency to honor her potential. She is an agile thinker, an adept problem solver and a dedicated writer. Furthermore, she is an encourager. One of her classmates remarked: “Nikki always sees things in a positive way. Many times, I get overwhelmed by everything I have to do, and Nikki is always the first one to assure me that I am smart enough and strong enough.” Through her quiet strength, Nikki exemplifies the spirit of Team Hele; she is always Moving it Forward.
