Congratulations to Mayfield High School writers Sarah Carlile, Gr. 11 and Gianna Somrak, Gr. 12 for their awards and recognition from Scholastics Art & Writing, the nation’s longest running recognition program for creative teens. The Cleveland Institute of Art hosts the Scholastics Art & Writing Competition every year. The winners were announced on Jan. 5, 2021 from nearly 3,000 entries from students in grades 7-12. Under the guidance and direction of MHS English teacher Kari Beery, Sarah Carlile earned a Gold Key, the highest honor, for her poem “
Pinocchio” and a Silver Key for her poem, “
The Broken Heart Vaccine.”
Gianna Somrak was awarded a Silver Key for her collection of work, “The Scale of Humanity Writing Portfolio” which included five pieces of writing: “
Fell” (Flash Fiction) Silver Key, “
Sunsets and Strawberries” (Short Story) Honorable Mention, “
Inside the Lines,”(Poem) “
Eldest” (Poem) and “
Lost” (Poem).
Gianna and Sarah will be honored at the Cleveland Institute of Art award ceremony and online exhibition January 30, 2021. Founded in 1923, the Scholastics Art & Writing mission is to inspire bold ideas in creative teens from across the country. Scholastics Art & Writing alumni include Truman Capote, Sylvia Plath, Joyce Carol Oates and Stephen King, to name a few.
