INSTRUCTION UPDATE: COVID-19 vaccinations for our school employees
February 18, 2021

Dear Mayfield teachers staff, parents and community,

Please read through the entire contents of this letter which contains important information about upcoming instruction dates.

As you know, Mayfield teachers and staff who wish to receive the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccination will do so on Thursday, March 4th. As a reminder, there is no school on March 4th.

Since the medical community continues to report that the second doses of the vaccine may likely have stronger side-effects, we anticipate this could be the case for our Mayfield teachers and staff which will limit our ability to provide in-person learning on Friday, March 5th. Therefore, Friday March 5th will be a full, remote learning day for students.

  • Our teachers have had much experience with full, remote instruction and will provide their students with the lessons, assignments and resources they need to have a remote day of instruction on March 5th.

  • If, however, a teacher’s reaction to the vaccine prohibits them from conducting remote instruction they should stay home and report a day of sick leave. School work and assignments will be available for students whose teacher(s) cannot teach remotely due to illness.

  • Teachers will talk with their students in the coming days to prepare them for the remote day of instruction on March 5th. Teachers who are well may conduct online, remote learning from their building, classrooms or remotely in order to accommodate technology and infrastructure needs.

  • Non-teaching staff (certified support staff, custodians, bus drivers, paraprofessionals, secretaries, building monitors, administrators, technology department support staff, maintenance, mechanics, food service workers, classified substitutes and Wildcat Sports and Fitness staff) will report to work as normally scheduled. If, however, non-teaching staff becomes ill due to adverse side effects of the vaccine and they are not able to be at work, they too should remain at home and report a day of sick leave.

  • Some paraprofessionals will be assigned to assist with remote classrooms. Paraprofessionals who are assigned to classrooms will also have the choice to work from home or a classroom.
Your principal and teacher(s) will be providing more detailed information in the coming days.

We understand these closures are another disruption for families, but please partner with us so all of our staff members who voluntarily choose to vaccinate against COVID-19 have the opportunity to do so.

Although this is a big step in helping to protect all of our K-12 school employees from COVID-19, the Centers for Disease Control and officials from the State of Ohio, Ohio Department of Health and the Cuyahoga County Board of Health continue to reinforce that those who are vaccinated can still be carriers and spreaders.

Wearing a mask, working to maintain 6 feet of distancing, and washing/sanitizing hands all remain critical strategies and will be our reality in our schools and in our communities for the foreseeable future.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,
Keith Kelly
Superintendent
