Service scholarship established to honor Mr. George Hughes

Dear Mayfield City Schools Friends and Family,

For 65 years, Mr. George Hughes has dedicated his life to serving others.

For the past 24 years,  Mr. Hughes has served Mayfield City Schools as a member, mentor and leader of the Mayfield Board of Education. During his career as a policeman which began in the 1950s, he worked in New Orleans for 17 years and then as Chief of Police of Gates Mills Village for 24 years. It was during that time, Chief Hughes extended his service as a volunteer in the Mayfield City Schools.

Mr. Hughes will retire from the Mayfield Board of Education, December 31, 2021. To honor his remarkable work as a board member, volunteer and civil servant, Mayfield City Schools has established the George Hughes Service Scholarship.

The scholarship will be awarded to two graduating Mayfield seniors who will pursue a career in the fields of education or public service.

As Mr Hughes said, “It has been my life’s calling to serve others.”

It is our privilege to honor his work.
