First Grade
Welcome, First Grade Families!
In first grade, music exploration leads to real music making. We sing, dance, and play rhythm instruments like rhythm sticks, tambourines, triangles, cymbals, and hand drums. We listen to many kinds of music from around the country and around the world.
As first graders learn to read words, they also learn to read music. We learn very basic rhythms such as quarter notes and eighth notes. We learn about the five-line music staff and how it shows high notes and low notes.
First graders take the basic building blocks of music and begin to compose their own short pieces, as well!
