Gates Mills student wins coveted prize: Superintendent For The Day

Gates Mills student wins coveted prize: Superintendent For The Day

For a month, Robert Kabenitz read. He read a lot. The Gates Mills Elementary fifth-grader won the coveted prize during the schools' October Read-A-Thon: Superintendent For A Day.

On October 29th, Robert and Gates Mills Elementary Principal Tammi Bender arrived at Central Office for Superintendent Keith Kelly to make good on a promise.

Robert toured Central Office, met Assistant Superintendent Joelle Magyar, HR Director Michael Barnes and all of the Central Office staff. Since he was the leader of the district for a day, Robert's classmates and even some of his teachers asked for a few favors: longer recess, bonuses and a perhaps a snow day.

It was a big day for an even bigger accomplishment: reading four books in a month which totaled an equivalent of about 1,000 pages.

Congratulations to Robert and the Gates Mills Elementary PTO who organized the Read-A-Thon and One School, One Book initiative.

The PTO raised about $6,000 for the school, but gave students a priceless gift: the love of reading.
