This year’s recipient is Mayfield coach Larry Pinto (video).

Pinto’s team started the season 0-1, but has run off 12 wins in a row. The Wildcats (12-1) will play Nordonia this weekend in a Division II state semifinal at Stewart Field in Solon.
Other finalists for the coach of the year award were Mentor’s Steve Trivisonno and Kirtland’s Tiger LaVerde.

“To be named as a finalist along with Coach Triv and Tiger, who is a two-time state champion and on his way to a third, is very humbling,” Pinto said. “I’m truly honored.”

The Tony Fisher Award winner and the coach of the year winner will be featured further on Thanksgiving when The News-Herald presents its annual all-star football team.
