Work to enhance safety & traffic flow at Mayfield Middle
School to begin October 10th
MAYFIELD HEIGHTS: A partnership agreement between the Mayfield
City Schools and the City of Mayfield Heights will enhance safety and traffic
flow at Mayfield Middle School.
The estimated four-week
construction project, which is slated to begin October 10th, will
widen the road between Mayfield Middle School and the Board office, creating an
additional dedicated “entrance ” lane
for bus use only.
The new traffic pattern
will allow buses to enter and “stack” in a separate lane, enabling other
drivers to proceed in the existing entrance lane.
The additional lane also
is expected to improve the operation of the traffic lights on SOM Center and
Ridgebury roads which, according to traffic engineers, currently are not
capable of handling the volume of cars and buses during the morning drop off.
Upon the recommendation
of Mayfield Heights Police Department and city engineers who have been studying
the traffic flow at MMS, the Mayfield Board of Education adopted a resolution
to proceed with the widening project.
“The creation of an
additional entrance to the school is both necessary and needed,” said
Superintendent Keith Kelly. “The additional lane will allow for a more efficient
and safe traffic flow and a much safer intersection for our students, parents
and bus drivers.”
Construction is expected to begin October 10th and should be
completed within four weeks, weather pending. Work will not occur during the
school week. Construction will take place after 4 p.m. on Fridays and over the
weekends. The site will be free of debris and safe for traffic to resume during
school hours.
