Village Quilters teach Center Elementary students the art of quilting for a cause

There are 65 Center Elementary fourth-graders who are electing to forego recess to learn the art of quilt making with the Mayfield Village Quilters.

Begun some 30 years ago by now-retired Center Elementary teacher, Jim Bezdek, the ABC Quilters Club is thriving with nearly equal attendance between boys and girls.

Divided into three, six-week sessions, students from Center's three fourth grades have volunteered their recess time to partner with the Village Quilters to make quilts for area hospitals, daycares  and veterans organizations.

The inter-generational group anticipates making about 250 quilts between now and the end of February. The ABC Quilters will end before the school year due to scheduled construction at the Mayfield Village Community Center.

"This is an example of what makes Mayfield so unique," said Superintendent Keith Kelly. "These kids are inspiring, really. At this age, to give up recess to help others says something about who they are. We're very appreciative of the Village Quilters and what they are teaching our students."
