Parenting a Special Needs Child: Coping with Grief

Parents of children with special needs often have complicated feelings, thoughts, and responses about caring for their child, including love, anger, sadness, disappointment, and guilt.   These are all part of the grieving process, which is a normal response to any significant change.  Join us as Kristina Austin, MSEd, LSW, and CMO of The Gathering Place, speaks about coping with the grief that only Special Needs Parents can understand.

Does your child have difficulty setting goals? Tend to be forgetful, even with repetitive tasks? Respond poorly to criticism? Struggle with self-management skills like focus, organization and planning ahead? 
If so, join us as Tori Cordiano, Ph.D., discusses why kids get overwhelmed and shares tips and tricks to reduce stress and help build success. Dr. Cordiano is a licensed clinical psychologist, the Assistant Director of Laurel School’s Center for Research on Girls, and a consulting psychologist for Laurel School in Shaker Heights.  Dr. Cordiano earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Case Western Reserve University in 2009.  She has served as an instructor at John Carroll University, Cleveland State University, and Case Western Reserve University.

Parents want to enjoy their kids and a less stressful family life.  You want your kids to be well prepared for life, and you know this means kids will make mistakes for which they must be held accountable.  Parenting the Love and Logic way will teach parents: how to avoid un-winnable power struggles, stay calm when upset, set enforceable limits, avoid enabling and begin empowering, help kids learn from their mistakes, raise kids who are family members rather than dictators, and much more! Workbooks for this course are $10.

All events are free, and are held at Millridge Elementary in the Multipurpose Room
