DNA ANALYSIS: Most Middle School students don't have the opportunity to solve crimes - until now

Most middle school students don't have an opportunity to solve crimes - until now.

Mayfield Middle School students are learning about and studying DNA crime analysis though the school's Medical Detectives class, a course of the STEM2M curriculum.

Recently, MMS Science teacher Dave Lammert invited the Mayfield Heights Police Department Detective Division to the Medical Detectives class as part of a collaborative outreach program with the MHPD.

"This is the perfect opportunity for the students to witness real police investigation," Mr. Lammert said.

Mayfield Heights Detective Donald Oberdoester arrived at the class with actual case studies and equipment, including photos which showed the students the meticulous techniques detectives use to solve crimes.

Students also participated in a mock investigation collecting evidence, running DNA and presenting  the final case in class to simulate a court of law atmosphere.
