PSA Update
In early December 2012, in the pouring rain, all six fire academy hopefuls from the Public Safety Academy took the firefighter combat challenge at CCC-West. All students passed in under-four minute times. The academy has a limit of seven minutes and would like to see under-five minute times. All PSA students - Chad Heppert, Dominick O'Brien, Justin Sala, John Spiccia, Kameron Watts, and Eric Gilbert - did great.
The Public Safety Academy class recently had two opportunities to experience real-life connections with safety personnel:

Environmental Education: 2nd Place DISTRICT & STATE QUALIFIERS
On October 25, the Landscape Operations and Cleveland Botanical Garden students from Gates Mills Environmental Center had the opportunity to take part in the FFA District 3 Landscape competition at Holden Arboretum. At this world class site, the students had the opportunity to visit the many gardens and natural areas under the guide of Holden’s naturalists. The students then took the competition. The competition consisted of identifying 250 trees, shrubs, flowers, insects, and diseases. They had to read and interpret a pesticide label as well as perform a safety inspection of a skid steer. Various landscape firms were gracious to write the test which they aligned with the PLANET trade group industry certification test. These landscape firms are the same people that will hire our students. The experience not only prepares the students for career placement, but shows the students what they still need to learn in order to move on to the next competition and to prepare themselves for the green industry career field.
The Gates Mills students placed 2nd which qualifies them to travel to Columbus Ohio on January 14 and 15 to take part in the State FFA Landscape Competition. The largest industry trade show in the Midwest will also be going on where students can meet various industry reps to see the newest technology. The students will have the experience of taking part in the largest landscape job fair in the Midwest. They can practice their interview skills and have the industry leaders check over resumes.
