The Pupil Services Department is committed to ensuring that every student has access to a high-quality education and the supports necessary to succeed. We believe that every student has unique strengths, abilities, and needs, and we are dedicated to creating educational opportunities that promote academic achievement, personal growth, independence, and lifelong success.

Our department works collaboratively with students, parents and guardians, teachers, administrators, related-service providers, and community partners to identify student needs, develop effective supports, and ensure that services are provided in accordance with Ohio and federal requirements.

Our Areas of Support

The Pupil Services Department provides leadership, coordination, and support in a variety of areas, including:

  • Special Education Services – Supporting students with disabilities through specially designed instruction, individualized supports, related services, and appropriate educational programming.

  • Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) – Facilitating a collaborative process for developing, implementing, monitoring, and reviewing IEPs that address individual student needs and goals.

  • Related Services – Coordinating services such as speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, counseling, school psychology, and other supports when educationally necessary.

  • School Psychology and Student Support Services – Supporting student learning, social-emotional development, behavior, mental wellness, and educational decision-making.

  • Intervention and Specialized Programming – Working with school teams to identify barriers to learning and develop evidence-based interventions and individualized supports.

  • Parent and Family Partnerships – Providing families with information, resources, and opportunities to actively participate in educational planning and decision-making.

  • Compliance and Procedural Safeguards – Ensuring that district practices and services align with applicable provisions of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Ohio law, Ohio Department of Education and Workforce requirements, and district policies.

A Collaborative Approach to Special Education

Special education is a service, not a place. We believe students with disabilities should have access to the general education curriculum and learning environments to the greatest extent appropriate to their individual needs.

Our special education teams use student data, evaluations, progress monitoring, family input, teacher expertise, and other relevant information to make individualized decisions regarding instruction, accommodations, services, and educational placement.

The IEP process is a collaborative effort. Parents and guardians are essential members of the IEP team, and their knowledge of their child is an important part of developing an effective educational program.

Partnership with Families

We recognize that families know their children best. Strong partnerships between families and schools are essential to student success.

The Pupil Services Department strives to ensure that families:

  • Understand their child's educational services and supports.

  • Have meaningful opportunities to participate in educational decision-making.

  • Receive information in a clear and understandable manner.

  • Know whom to contact when questions or concerns arise.

  • Feel respected, heard, and valued throughout the educational process.

We welcome questions and encourage families to communicate with their child's teacher, intervention specialist, building administrator, school psychologist, related-service provider, or the Pupil Services Department whenever they need assistance.

We are committed to identifying and building upon student strengths, removing barriers to learning, providing appropriate supports, and creating inclusive educational experiences that allow every student to reach their potential.

Through collaboration, evidence-based practices, meaningful family engagement, and a commitment to continuous improvement, the Pupil Services Department works to ensure that every student is known, supported, challenged, and empowered to succeed.
